Climatologists of the city of Písek

Datum: 07.01.2022 Kategorie: Planned projects

The goal of the project is for the city to learn how to successfully care for the climate in urban and rural areas, and to reduce the negative effects of existing urbanization as much as possible. Because climate care in the city is an essential indication of quality of life and should not be overlooked in the future, the organizational unit will create the job of city climatologist.

The project is now in its planning stages and is divided into two halves. The first section focuses on the creation of the profession of urban climatologist, while the second section focuses on public awareness of climate change.

Establishment of the climatologist position in Písek
With the acceptance of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the city of Písek has pledged to reduce CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030 and increase climate change resilience. Following that, a document titled SECAP: Action Plan for Sustainable Energy and Climate was prepared, which was authorized by the City Council on 18 November 2019 by Resolution No. 696/19, and was adopted as a strategy document by the City Council on 6 May 2021.

Urban climatology is a scientific discipline that is useful in decision-making, particularly in terms of spatial planning, the removal or minimizing of negative effects of climate change, and so on. In many foreign towns, the job of climatologist has long been regarded as a model of good practice.

The overall goal of the project is to develop a mechanism for evaluating the city's planned investment event from a climate perspective. Each city investment project will require the opinion of the city climatologist, who will evaluate the impact of the specific event and assess its influence on the city from a climatic perspective, in addition to the opinion of the Department of the Environment and other stakeholders.

Local days for climate and energy in Písek
Funds would be set aside in the subsidy for the organizing of a public event on current themes such as energy efficiency, the utilization of renewable energy sources, and climate change resilience. Smart Písek, an organizational unit, has already staged a one-day activity as part of the European Mobility Week in 2019 (a similar event was planned for 2020, but was postponed owing to the pandemic). Panel talks with high school students, screenings of energy and climate films, and other related activities were presented in addition to the outdoor festivities.
