The Covenant of Mayors is a powerful European initiativefor local and regional authorities that have voluntarily committed to increase energy efficiency and renewable energy consumption in the areas they administer.

The city of Písek joined the Covenant of Mayors in 2017. The Covenant of Mayors is a coalition of cities, municipalities, and the European Commission that was formed shortly after the adoption of the 2008 climate and energy package. Its intended audience consists of municipalities that voluntarily agree to:

  • reducing CO2 emissions by at least 40 % by 2030;
  • increasing resilience to the effects of climate change.

They achieve this through:

  • energy savings, energy efficiency, and the use of energy from renewable sources, espeacially in the areas of buildings, transport, and public lighting;
  • appropriate adaptation measures.

Further activities:

  1. Elaboration of the SECAP study
    SECAP study (Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan) preparation in compliance with applicable legislation and Covenant of Mayors criteria. (It is an essential criterion for participation in the Covenant of Mayors, according to the SEAP GUIDEBOOK - HOW TO DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY ACTION PLAN and other methodological materials available at: https://www.covenantofmayors.eu/IMG/pdf/guidebook_final_english.pdf
  2. Local days for energy Písek
    Within the European Mobility Week, two one-day activities were organized. There were also panel talks with high school students, screenings of energy and climate films, and other related activities in addition to the outdoor festivities.

  3. Indoor Environment Manager Competition
    The competition, which was held as part of the project "Comprehensive preparation and education in the field of reducing carbon footprint and climate change for Smart Písek," aimed to encourage interest in building energy management and to spread the debate about energy efficiency outside of the school environment. This sub-activity was implemented in two phases, namely pilot verification and full implementation.

  4. Briefly about the competition:
    The competition is for the best school manager in terms of indoor environmental quality and the best proposal for energy-saving measures. The competition's goal is to involve primary school students in the City of Psek's efforts to improve the region's environment. The goal is to follow up on school instruction in the cross-sectional issue of Environmental Education, particularly the theme area of Man-Environment Relationship. The competition is centered on a specific theme, which is the control of the indoor environment quality in school buildings and the proposal of energy-saving methods. The concentration of CO2 is a vital measure of the quality of the indoor environment. During the competition, students measure the values of this gas in the school classroom. They then apply what they've learned to make recommendations for improving the classroom environment. All of this was possible thanks to the expertise of o.s. Smart Písek. The quality of the internal atmosphere in buildings is a hot topic in the industry right now. The so-called quality managers of the indoor environment are responsible for its improvement. (https://smart.pisek.eu/soutez2019)
